What is frogMob?
An experimental method of guerilla research developed by global innovation firm frog design, frogMob is based on the idea that anyone can channel their inner design researcher by looking for inspiration from everyday life. Tapping into frog’s global networks and the broader community, frogMob encourages people from all over the world to submit their photos and stories to help us take a quick pulse on emerging trends that can inform our design process.
How is frogMob different from traditional design research?
frogMob is an open, crowdsourced approach to research, and it doesn’t replace our traditional design research methods, which often involve weeks or months of in-depth interviews, observation, and synthesis. Instead, frogMob adds a new layer to what we can offer to our clients and pro-bono work. frogMob gives us the opportunity to rapidly identify patterns across markets and geographies, and ultimately glean inspiration from unexpected sources.
Who can participate in a frogMob?
We encourage anyone to be a part of frogMob. If you’ve got a camera and a healthy curiosity about the world around you, chances are you’re a good candidate to contribute and see what it’s like to be a design researcher.
Why should I participate in a frogMob?
By participating in frogMob and sharing your insights and inspirations, you are playing an active role in frog's design process. As a contributor, we hope to engage you in a dialogue with frog’s research teams, helping us to extend our reach into new markets and further our ability to bring diverse global perspectives to our work.
One of the goals for frogMob is to demonstrate how your contributions have informed our work whenever possible, and to showcase the most inspiring photos and stories along the way. We will do this via our design mind online and print magazine with a special feature devoted to the best of frogMob. And while we don’t offer financial incentives, we will regularly promote our most active participants via our social networks to give your contributions more exposure.
Can I submit any photo to a frogMob?
To submit a photo to frogMob, we ask that all photos are original. Stock photography or published database images won’t be accepted.
How do you decide the topic for a frogMob?
The content for each frogMob is based on our need to gather insights for a particular client’s requirements. For example, a client was interested in research on power supplies and plug adaptors. So we conducted a frogMob that asked participants to send us photos and insights related to the ways they use power on a daily basis—the cluttered cords and the quick fixes we find at home, at work, or in transit that make the best of what we have available. These contributions then fed in to our more in-depth local research efforts that were conducted concurrently.
We also plan to use frogMob to inspire our pro-bono work, and we encourage you to check back frequently for updates on our latest frogMob efforts.
Can I only submit photos for a current frogMob?
While we hope to get as many photos and stories as possible for current frogMobs, we also appreciate your contributions of design inspirations that may fall outside these topics. To submit a photo for a non-current frogMob, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
How do you use my information?
Should you submit your photos to frogMob, we respect your privacy and we won’t share your personal information or email address with third parties without your permission. Submissions are voluntary and unpaid, and you own the rights to your content. For details on terms and conditions, please go to: http://frogmob.frogdesign.com/terms-of-use.html or email email@example.com.
How will you use the content I submit?
Your photos and stories will be displayed on the frogMob site and may also be featured in our design mind online and print magazine. We may use the content you submit for our work on client programs or for pro-bono work, as indicated. We will not share your contact information with any third parties, and you remain the sole owner of the content.
How can I give you feedback or suggest a new feature?
We welcome your input on how we can make frogMob better. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with your suggestions.
How did frogMob start?
Started as an internal experiment by our San Francisco studio, our pilot effort asked frogs in our eight global studios to gather photos and insights about work bikes, defined as any bike used to make a living. The team was curious to find out how research from one studio would compare to another, and how the similarities and differences from around the world might inspire innovation. In just one week, frogs from cities around the world submitted more than 200 photos together with detailed insights on an astonishing array of work bikes. The success of the pilot gave us a strong idea that we could apply this methodology to impact the work we do for clients and for our pro-bono efforts.
